Chapter One Look Inside

Henry drummed his fingers on the basement table. The moon cast its light onto the wood surface and a few lamps warmly lit the room. The night sky outside was clear and Henry could see the stars twinkle when he glanced out the windows. It was almost 10pm and the floor near the old TV was lined with sleeping bags. But no one was remotely interested in using them. They were all too excited to sleep. It was Saturday night and Seth was sleeping over… and it was a full moon.
“Come on!” Seth bemoaned as he looked at the dice on the table in front of them. “It’s a completely full moon, let’s go!” He flicked the dice as if trying to get them to come to life, but they remained dark and blank.
“It must not be all the way a full moon yet. At least, not for the dice.” Henry sighed and leaned back in his chair. He turned to look out the high basement window at the moon. It looked full to him, but the dice didn’t seem to agree.
He looked back to the table at the map laid out in front of them. His fingers found the point on the map where the mountain started. They had skirted the base when hiding in the wolf’s den. The base was shown on the map, but the top was still missing.
They were all in their day clothes and ready for an adventure. Henry looked at the dice longingly. The treasure was waiting and the moon seemed full. But the dice still refused to glow.
“Maybe we’re wrong.” Robin said with a shrug. “Maybe it’s not the full moon that triggers them?”
“Ugh, don’t say that!” exclaimed Seth, pushing back from the table in frustration.
“Hey, let’s talk about something else.” Henry suggested, trying to think of a way to distract Seth. “What do you think the treasure will be?” He prompted them.
Seth’s eyes lit up. “Gold, obviously. And maybe some weapons!”
“I hope there is another dagger!” said Robin, excitedly. “I was reading about dual wielding in the manual. There are some cool attacks you can do, but only if you have two daggers.” She jumped up from her seat and slashed her hands rapidly through the air, miming a two-handed attack.
“Ohhh, that’s so cool!” said Seth.
“I hope there’s a spellbook.” said Henry, longing filled his voice. He was thrilled that the journal he found in the wolf’s den had helped them with Elias and would help them on their next adventure. But he really wanted to learn some new spells too.
A few days after they had gotten home from their last adventure, Henry had noticed a new spell on his character sheet. Impulsare retro gratanter was now written in black ink under Spells. It had taken Henry a moment to realized that it was the repulsion spell that Elias had used on them several times, and once he had he was even more excited to get back into the game to give it a try. He was also disappointed that he hadn’t been able to grab Elias’s journal in addition to the map. But the mayor had been too close to it. He hoped he would have another chance to find a real spellbook.
“That would be fun. Maybe you’ll learn how to fly!” Seth said, now running around the table with his arms spread out like he was flying.
Henry laughed at the idea, but knew it was unlikely for a wizard of his level. Still, it was fun to imagine flying through the air like an eagle. Henry did hope that this next adventure would lead to move spell discoveries. There were so many cool things for wizards to do, and Henry was ready to uncover more abilities.
The group spent the next few minutes dreaming about what might be waiting for them when they reached the treasure. Seth made increasingly ridiculous suggestions for spells and items that had them all laughing until tears rolled down their faces.
“Or maybe I’ll find a pair of swords and wear them on my back like a barbarian warrior!” Seth stood up and puffed out his chest before pretending to pull two giant swords from his back. He waved his arms around as he attacked invisible enemies with his invisible weapons.
The clock ticked to 11pm and the laugher from their wild guesses had faded from the room. Henry returned his gaze to the dice once again.
He sighed deeply and picked up the dice. “Maybe we should just go to bed and check them tomorrow. It will be a full, full moon tomorrow and we can just find out then if that’s the trigger.” He tossed them onto the table and looked up at the others.
He was not surprised to see the disappointment on their faces. He was disappointed too.
Robin sighed too. “Maybe you’re right.” She stood up from her chair as Henry watched. As she turned to head over to her sleeping bag, her eyes froze and went wide. She slowly turned her body back to the table and sat down with a thud.
Henry followed her gaze and immediately understand why she had stopped.
The dice were glowing. The runes were casting a bright blue glow against the iridescent surface of the dice.
His heart leapt in his chest. A wide grin spread across his face and he clapped his hands together in joy.
“We were right.” Robin said, her voice barely above a whisper as she stared at the glowing dice. “Henry. We were right!” she said, louder this time.
Henry took a deep breath. They were right.
